Question:

I want to put brick on an existing wall in my living room. Is it safe to do so? Will the structure be strong enough, or is there a material that can be mistaken for the real thing and is mor emanageable and less espensive?

Reply:

I'd advise against real brick because it is heavy and you will require extra structural support. There are all kinds of substitutions. Check your local building supply stores for a thin, ornamental, lightweight brick that looks as if the face of the brick has been shaved off. I've seen this used quite convincingly in an archway around a countertop stove. You could also use 'brick' wallboard panels, wallpaper, or even stencil a brick design.
