Question:
I am planning to buy a house and have found one that fits me perfectly. However, there is one problem. In the backyard, I've noticed there are hydro lines over the pool. I have been searching for information about the safety aspect but have had no luck. Do you have any information or do you know where I could continue my research?
Reply:
It would be difficult to find information about your problem. I would want to know if the lines are in good shape. Are they well connected to the home and power poles? Who maintains the lines and their connections? What is the clearance of the lines in relationship to the pool? Perhaps you could consider putting the lines below ground. You will experience some disruption to your landscaping and rerunning the lines will come at a price, but I think it would be worth it for the peace of mind it would bring.
Approach your local utility company to enquire if they provide this service, what the fees would be, and what permits would be required. If they do not provide the service, ask them if they have a list of companies that would. Also ask what involvement, if any, the utility company would have with such a project. You may want to approach your home insurer to find out any concerns they may have. Ask if placing the lines below ground would have a positive affect on your home insurance rate.
